At Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district, in the Sahyadri, at the source of the Godavari.
The trust records that the present temple was built by the third Peshwa, Balaji Bajirao, between 1740 and 1760, on the site of an older temple, and opened on 16 February 1756 on Mahashivratri. It also records 400 steps on the northern side, built from a donation by Lalchand Sheth of Karachi, for the climb to the fort above.
Trimbakeshwar is an active temple with a daily ritual schedule, not a monument. The free queue is the default: it costs nothing and on a normal weekday it moves well. Paid darshan, if the trust offers one, buys a shorter line rather than a different view of the linga. On festival days the paid line is often suspended entirely.
Aarti is the part worth planning around. Slots are limited, some are booked days ahead, and walk-ins are turned away once the hall is full.
Darshan runs from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM, with three pujas through the day at the linga.

Darshan runs through a free pass and a paid entry, both booked on the trust site or at its counter, and the pujas the trust sells (Rudrabhishek and Laghurudra) are booked the same way. The rites that draw people here are done at fixed hours and need booking ahead.
Mahashivratri, the Shravan Mondays and the Kalsarpa days are the periods when the town and the queue both fill; the trust posts the programme on its festivals page.
Two periods are heavy at every one of the twelve: Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan. What is specific to Trimbakeshwar is the part this site has not sourced yet.Data check pending
What Mahashivratri changes at all twelve →Three ways people stay at Trimbakeshwar, cheapest and closest first.
Kalsarp and Narayan Nagbali rites are booked in the town. Most visitors give the temple a few hours and leave the same day, which is a miss: the places worth half a day sit within a short drive, and going early or late avoids the crowd that arrives with the coaches.
What to see here, with the distance and the time it needs, is being written per temple.Data check pending
Phones and cameras are not allowed inside the sanctum area at any of the twelve. Lockers and deposit counters sit at or near the gate.
Covered shoulders and knees are the safe default. Checked against each temple's own notice.Data check pending
Wheelchair access, the length of the barefoot stretch and the shoe stand are checked at the gate rather than assumed.Data check pending
Trimbakeshwar on Mahashivratri and during Shravan runs on a different schedule with far longer queues. See the festival pages for what changes.
